Sailing in Turkey
From traditional shore side villages and bustling modern marinas to historical ruins and endless crystal clear coasts, Turkey combines stunning scenery with tradition, modernity, welcoming locals and delicious unique cuisine.
From the Gulf of Gulluk in the north our sailing area extends down to Finike in the south and out to the Greek Dodecanese Islands. Its the place to experience ideal sailing conditions with steady north-westerly winds of 12 to 25 knots. Clear blue waters welcome you in deserted tree lined bays while modern marinas sit comfortably amongst steep wooded hillsides scattered with ancient ruins. Discover insights into history through fantastically preserved archaeological sites and still-standing ancient cities. The presence of the Lycians’ ancestral culture remains strong through folk law telling of an independent race who built stone cities and buried their dead in magnificent tombs.
Enjoy a lively afternoon amongst the bazaars of Bodrum, wander cobbled streets in the yachtsman’s favourite of Marmaris, explore the caves and ruins of Caunos or the islets and well loved anchorages of Fethiye. With such diversity on offer along the coastline, whatever you are searching for on your sailing trip with us you are certain to find it in Turkey.
The Lycian Coast
The Lycian coast is famed for its great sailing with plenty of sunshine, good winds and welcoming waves. At the heart of this yachtsman’s favourite sailing ground sits Marmaris. Considered to be the best marina in Turkey, Netsel has all the facilities that you could want and more, especially since the town centre is just a short walk away.
The marina sits 10 to 15 minutes to the east of thriving Marmaris, perfect for a lively night. This cosmopolitan town has numerous bars, restaurants and shops and can occupy even the most active minds. Still retaining its traditional charm, the Old Quarter is a honeycomb of narrow streets adorned with leather, carpet and jewellery shops. The town nestles on the northern edge of the bay at the base of high green hills overlooked by the castle of Suleyman.
The town of Göcek lies in a wooded bay at the northern end of Skopea Liman. With its surrounding steep pine clad hills and islands it provides a beautiful haven from all but the strongest south and southwesterly winds. It has a delightful air of rural tranquility and is conveniently close to the airport. The Sunsail yachts are moored across the water from Göcek Town in Club Marina.
The Marina is set amidst landscaped gardens and pine trees offering a wide range of facilities including restaurants, bars and games areas for children. There is a regular ferry service running between the Marina and Skopea Marina (Gocek Town).
The facilities in the town are great making it an excellent place to shop. The town has quickly grown from a small fishing village to popular yacht charter base. Many of the shops in the town will deliver to your yacht and the restaurants offer an excellent choice of local cuisine. If you have time to head further afield, there is a regular dolmus/taxi service into Marmaris and Fethiye.
THE CARIAN COAST
Turgutreis is situated in the furthest west points of Bodrum Peninsula between the Güllük and Gökova gulfs. There is a modern marina i,equipped with plenty of on shore activities and Turgutreis Town is only a short stroll away for people watching over a cold drink or a spot of sight seeing. Before you cast off enjoy a traditional meal at one of the many restaurants and bars, or pick up a few souvenirs . Take advantage of one of the beautiful local beaches at Aspat, Akyarlar or Huseyin Feneri before you head out to explore the coastline.
Turgutreis is perfectly placed to explore both the Gulf of Gulluk to the north and the Gulf of Gokova to the south. Head north and discover the ancient city of Iassos. Dating back to the Bronze Age, this archeological site remains largely intact and every year an Italian teams arrives to dig down a little further! Nearby Gumusluk, meaning ‘place of silver’, is an enchanted little harbour offering great shelter for a lovely evening. During Summer, wade across to Rabbit Island for a dramatic sunset view over Kalimnos. Famed for its waterfront restaurants, head away from the harbour to explore the sunken city of Myndus.
Sailing out into the Gulf of Gokova, Bodrum is one of the biggest attractions in the local area. A hive of activity all year round, this town has something for everyone and more. Buzzing nightlife, fantastic shopping, stunning scenery and historical buildings all mingle together to absorbing the unique Bodrum atmosphere. Spend the day pounding the streets and the dance the nights away at the world famous Halikarnas open air night club.
Head southeast down to Amazon Creek, a lovely narrow bay lined with pine trees offering shelter from the Meltem winds. As you sail up the creek, picturesque bays line either side ideal for lunchtime stops.
